Big Bend National Park Weather

'Big Bend National Park' is a national park in Texas, USA. The park is currently administering around 393 km of the boundary between Mexico and USA. It covers 801,163 acres, being the largest protected area of the Chihuahuan Desert and ecology in the USA. The Big Bend includes at least 450 species of birds, 1,200 species of plants, 75 species of mammals and 56 species of reptiles. The national park is also known in the archeology domain, as there have been discovered artifacts at least 9,000 years old and also organisms from the Cretaceous and Tertiary eras. 

Also considered as being 'three parks in one', Big Bend National Park includes mountain, desert, and river environments, so one can say that the park shows significant contrasts, with a climate that can be characterized as being 'extreme'. The Big Bend National Park weather is quickly changing - often being said that 'if you don't like the weather, just wait a minute'. The park's weather is hot during summer and spring (especially May and June), the temperature varying significantly, from desert floor, 1.800 feet (550 m) along the river to Emory Peak, to Chisos Mountains, at 7,832 feet (2,387 m); temperature can often exceed 100 °F (38 °C) in the lower elevations and can go under 

Winters are normally mild throughout the park, with some periods of cold weather and light snow and occasionally sub-freezing temperatures.From mid-June to October, the weather is cool and rainy, with heavy thunderstorms and flooding, period also known as the rainy season. Annual precipitation is under 10 inches in the majority of the park areas, but it can also exceed 30 inches in mountains.In the fall and in the spring, the weather is warm and pleasant. Winters are mild, with some periods of cold weather and light snow, so visitors to the Big Bend National Park must be prepared for a wide range of conditions.

What one should also take into consideration is the fact that the temperature of the air is changing with 5 degrees per 1,000 feet of elevation. For example, in the mountains, the weather can be cooler with more than 20 degrees than in the areas along Rio Grande. 

As we can see, there are a variety of conditions in the Big Bend National Park, so tourists - be prepared. Take with you comfortable clothes, walking shoes, a wide-brimmed hat and sun screen. Remember to always carry water when hiking; on average, a person needs one gallon of water per day.
